Anthropology of Consciousness

Guidelines for Articles

AOC
is the voice of the anthropological study of consciousness.  In this role, AOC accepts papers from anthropologists who are concerned with all aspects of this area of inquiry, welcoming contributions from all fields within the discipline.  The journal also welcomes submissions from scholars in other disciplines, both humanities and sciences.

AOC follows The Chicago Manual of Style (14th edition, University of Chicago Press, 1993) for most matters of style, including hyphenation, capitalization, punctuation, abbreviations, and grammar, and Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary (10th edition, 1993) for spelling.

Please submit to the editor at the address below manuscripts in triplicate (3 copies), accompanied, if possible, by a disk using a common word processing program.  Authors who wish to have their manuscripts returned must include a self-addressed, stamped envelope.  Manuscripts must be double-spaced, including quotations, notes, references, and figure captions.  Use one side of a 81/2-by-11 inch or A-4 bond paper (do not use erasable or onion skin paper).  Margins throughout the manuscript (top, bottom, and both sides) must be at least 1 inch; the right margin should not be justified and character spacing should not be proportional.  Dot matrix print is acceptable only if the characters are clear and have legible ascenders and descenders.

Include as separate sections beginning on new pages a title page with the complete title and the name and affiliation and address of each author, include e-mail address if desired; the abstract; the text of the paper; notes; references; figure captions; and each table.  Number all pages consecutively.

References: All entries in the reference list must be cited in the text, and vice versa.  In the text, references are cites in parentheses, with last name, year of publication, and where necessary, page numbers.  The reference list should be in the style of American Anthropologist (AA): ordered alphabetically by author's last name; author on one line, primary author's last name first; date of publication indented on the next line, followed by title and then publisher's city and name.  All subsequent lines should be indented beyond the date. No underlining or boldface should be used in the reference list.  The AA style manual is available to download from the AAA's web site: www.aaanet.org.

Illustrations: AOC generally publishes black and white pen and ink drawings which can be scanned and formatted as Macintosh PICT or TIFF files.  Photographs will be considered. AOC publishes reviews of books, films, videos, and other productions related to the anthropological study of consciousness.  For a style sheet for reviews, click here.

Manuscript Submissions and General Information: Aoc is now using the on-line submission service known as "Manuscript Central." You may submit your article or book review by going to: mc.manuscriptcentral.com/anoc
